Compare The Presidential Candidates' Immigration Policies

I recently mentioned a statement Barack Obama made about immigration policy. You can see the candidates' complete immigration policies on their Web sites — Barack Obama's immigration policies and John McCain's immigration policies.

Both candidates, fortunately, are in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. It is my personal opinion that if immigration reform is your primary concern, Barack Obama is the better choice. I believe John McCain will have a harder time working with what will surely be a Democratic Congress. And please note the subject headings for the two Web site sections. Barack Obama titles his "Immigration" while John McCain titles his "Border Security." I think this is a subtle but important insight into their thinking.

Border security obviously is of great importance to the United States. But if we wait until our borders are truly "secure" we'll never get around to comprehensive immigration reform. We need to work on both at the same time, not total security first (even if that were posssible) and then comprehensive reform eventually.
