Lewisville Decides Not To Pursue Official-English Resolution
The Lewisville city council has decided not to invoke an "English-only" policy. This is good news, in my opinion. I just see no up-side to such policies, and I think the city council came to the same conclusion. The vote was 4-1 against pursuing such a resolution.
There was evidence that translating city documents into Spanish cost only $475 during the most recent fiscal year, but perhaps the most powerful testimony during the meeting was from the mayor of the small town of Oak Point, Texas, which enacted a similar English-only ordinance recently. This was his statement:
"It did not change the way the city is run," he said "We did not save any money, and we did not become more efficient with this resolution. The only thing it did for the city of Oak Point was to pit neighbor against neighbor."
